What is Four Wall Therapy?

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, inpatient treatment helps you by keeping you out of the environment where the substance abuse occurred. Although inpatient therapy is actually much more than this, there is a part of it that is sometimes known as four wall therapy.

Four Wall Therapy Explained

Four wall therapy is a passive therapy. The principle of it has to do with the confinement of inpatient therapy. You are away from your normal environment, which helps reduce the stress and anxiety that the drug use brings. Four wall therapy is simply the act of being surrounded by four safe walls where you will not be judged or made fun of because of your addiction.

It helps to keep you centered and balanced in a nonjudgmental environment. No one at a treatment center will blame you for the drug use and everyone there wants to help you recover.

How Four Wall Therapy Helps

Four wall therapy provides a safe and nonjudgmental environment for addicts to recover in.

Four wall therapy helps by allowing a person to relax away from the stress that they ordinarily experience. Many times, this stress causes them to be addicted to a substance or a behavior in the first place.

Although it does not seem like much, the safety of the treatment center is beneficial in itself. Many people are so stressed and caught up in their addictions that the centering experience of not having anything but self-healing to worry about helps them to recover.

Who Needs Four Wall Therapy?

Many of the people who choose inpatient therapy do it because of the four wall concept. Some of the reasons to choose a place that offers four walls and a safe nonjudgmental place are:

  • Drugs and violence at home
  • Homelessness
  • Environmental triggers
  • People with behavioral addictions such as stress induced self-harm

People that need four wall therapy need a way to be safe in an environment where they can get clean without pressure. The people who benefit the most from four wall therapy are those who cannot find a stress-free environment at home on their own.

Stopping a drug addiction takes time and energy. For those with no support structure and no other way out of the addiction, an inpatient drug treatment center can give them the support and four walls that they need.

Why do I need Inpatient Rehab?

Four wall therapy also works for those who come from an abusive environment. It gets them away from the abuse and helps them stop a drug habit at the same time. Many domestic violence victims are also drug addicts. The stress of the abuse causes them to turn to drugs. Being out of their environment allows their stress level to decrease and allows them to work on themselves.
